Field Lab - Confusing Fall Warblers - Oak Mountain State Park ($)

  • Oak Mountain State Park Oak Mountain State Park 200 Terrace Drive Pelham, AL, 35124 United States (map)

Cost: $30

Capacity: 12

LOCATION DESCRIPTION / In-person: It's that time of year again - all the warblers look the same! As most of us know, warblers in their breeding plumages can still be a task to view and identify due to their quick and elusive nature, usually well above our heads, and offer few good looks for a reliable identification. When fall comes back around, this task becomes even tougher as many of these birds molt into non-breeding plumage that can be very similar in shades of greens, grays, and yellows among the various species present.

Join Program Coordinator, Andrew Lyeard, to crack the code of this tricky group during the first installment of the Confusing Fall Warblers Field Lab, this time at Oak Mountain State Park in Birmingham. We will meet at the ADA Overlook on Peavine Falls Drive close to sunrise to count and try to identify as many transient warblers (and anything else flying by) as we can! Most of our time will be spent at the overlook, but if migration slows here, we may walk along the road and hunt for mixed flocks and work on key ID skills at other parts of the overlook!

LOCATION DETAILS / In-person: We will meet at the ADA overlook of Oak Mountain State Park promptly at 7:00am. There are restrooms in the parking lots before the drive up to our meeting place but not at the overlook, so please plan accordingly.

Please note there are entry fees for this Alabama State Park as follows:
• $5 per Adult (age 12+)
• $2 per Child (age 4 to 11)

• Free for ages 3 & under
